thankful thursday // seattle, washington

Okay, inspired by my lovely new friend des & her charming little lists, and because it’s June and because the sun is finally out which in turns makes the world just seem like it’s overflowing with possibilities… I am starting a weekly post called Thankful Thursday.

It’s simple, and I’m hoping it will be as interactive as possible, so come along & be thankful with me!

I am not afraid to admit that I am a glass-half-empty kind of gal… I know I’m not alone in that, so please lift your half-empty glass along with me and let’s cheers. I do still, even as a well-rounded & logical adult, have to actually take time to remind myself how fortunate I am. Which is why I love journaling, on paper as well as in this blog. Thank you, by the way, for reading my blog, looking at my photos, and occasionally bearing through my ramblings-on. Thank you.

So, I would like to take some time every Thursday (only because Thursday goes well with Thankful… duh.) to make a list, publicly, of why I am thankful. I am hoping that you will respond with blog comments with your lists as well; and with permission, I may sometimes use your lists to contribute to this ongoing conversation. Also, for every blog comment I receive on my Thankful Thursday posts, I will donate $2.00 to the Ballard Food Bank. I chose that organization because they are in my neighborhood; I walk by their facility often, and when I see them so hard at work serving our community, I feel so thankful that there are caring & generous people out there, and so thankful that there are a million reasons to be thankful for what I have in my life. I am also open to suggestions to other worthy causes… other organizations that help us feel thankful. So, please… bear witness to my weekly soul-searching, participate by taking the time to feel thankful in what you have, and contribute by leaving me some blog comments.

“I am thankful for laughter, except when milk comes out of my nose.”
-Woody Allen

Touche, Woody Allen, touche. I am thankful for laughter as well, and I’m also thankful that when I snort out loud, my friends snort along with me.

And this week, I am thankful for:

…my friends, who can rally like no other… and they include but are not limited to: jenny (who took the above photo!), des, sergio, jeramie, heather, jon, jenn
…my dog chloe, who may no longer be the chloe that we remember, but her loyalty to us is lasting until the very end
…my life, and the fact that i’m alive… even more so tomorrow, i’m thinking, when i document the funeral of a loving family man, gone too soon
…my madeline, who dances & sings & bakes all the time
…my mister, with whom i will be sharing a 2nd/3rd anniversary with this coming monday
…shadows. is that weird? i love seeing shadows in my house, because that means that the sun is shining outside
…my feet, a good pair of socks (or two!) and my shoes. i love walking. i walk everywhere… it makes me feel connected to my surroundings, and i am so thankful that i have the freedom to walk where i please.

There you go! I never told you I wasn’t a simpleton! Hopefully this list will evolve into something not resembling a kindergartener’s list of what they’re thankful for! I truly am simple… for instance, I actually cried during the violin solo at Madeline’s school concert last night. It moved me so. It moved me to tears.

Thank you! I’m so thankful for you! Please comment back & tell the world why you’re thankful this week!

with much love & gratitude… catherine

Nicole Pike - Wonderful idea and I’ll be glad to join in.

I’m thankful for:

– The use of my limbs. I often think about the possibility of losing all strength in my legs and it breaks my heart to envision a world where I can’t dance. Then I feel regretful that I’m not in dance classes. So, new goal – get in some dance classes. If I couldn’t use my hands I wouldn’t be able to craft or playing guitar.

– My voice. I’m thankful that I’m able to sing but even if I couldn’t hit a sing note on point, I’d still try my hardest and sing the loudest because it gives release to your soul.

– A supportive family. Knowing I have people who stand by me through the best and worst of it all. My parents are exceptional people and I hope that I live my life in a way that gives them pride.

– The senses to smell and taste. It’s simple but hot damn am I grateful. Nothing is quite as gratifying as the smell of a rain after a drought or the taste of the ripest strawberry.
